The VMSC remains one of the most well-equipped and best-trained organizations that provide heavy rescue and surface water rescue services.  Only used in emergency situations, "rescue" usually means freeing someone from being trapped in a vehicle following an automobile accident.  However, "rescue" can also entail a person trapped in a collapsed building or stranded in a high place such as a water tower. The VMSC also maintains two surface water rescue boats capable of assisting in rescuing someone trapped in water.  In 1999, the VMSC recorded more than fifty surface water rescue saves during the severe floods in eastern Montgomery County.  Our rescue technicians involved in water rescue have undergone additional specialized training through such organizations at the U.S. Coast Guard and START rescue training.
